The inspiration for the Diamond Chair came from the intricate cut surfaces of diamonds, which share a striking resemblance to the geometric lines of the chair. This abstract aesthetic form adds a touch of sophistication to any space. The design of the chair focuses on the dialogue between function and form, resulting in a visually captivating piece that also serves its purpose flawlessly.
What sets the Diamond Chair apart from others is its meticulous attention to detail and the seamless integration of shape and function. The chair's design draws inspiration from traditional Chinese aesthetics, infusing modern design ideas and techniques to create a harmonious blend of the past and the present. By carefully selecting materials, colors, and forms, the Diamond Chair successfully integrates the essence of Eastern aesthetics into a contemporary design.
The Diamond Chair is made using a combination of materials. The back of the chair is crafted from PMMA, a translucent material that beautifully reflects light and adds a delicate texture to the design. The chair's base is made of solid wood, which not only provides stability but also showcases the natural beauty of the material. The result is a chair that not only looks visually stunning but also offers a comfortable seating experience.
Measuring at 640mm in width, 625mm in depth, and 855mm in height, the Diamond Chair is designed to fit seamlessly into any space, whether it's a modern living room or a traditional study.
The creation of the Diamond Chair was not without its challenges. The integration of different materials posed a significant hurdle, requiring careful consideration of their properties and finding suitable connection methods to ensure durability. Additionally, the processing of red PMMA presented its own set of challenges, as it required maintaining its aesthetic properties while meeting the necessary strength requirements.
Yi Feng's Diamond Chair is not only a testament to the designer's creativity and technical prowess but also a celebration of the beauty of diamonds and traditional Chinese aesthetics. By seamlessly blending form and function, this chair exemplifies the possibilities of modern design in capturing the essence of cultural heritage.
The Diamond Chair project began in September 2017 in Beijing and was completed in March 2018, also in Beijing. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to explore the integration of various materials and their environmental impact. The result is a chair that not only showcases the designer's vision but also reflects a commitment to sustainability and responsible design practices.
The Diamond Chair has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2019. This award recognizes the chair's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
With its captivating design, the Diamond Chair is a true testament to the power of merging art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology. It is a piece that not only enhances the aesthetics of any space but also tells a story of cultural heritage and the limitless possibilities of modern design.
